Evan's birthday was one month ago. It was an interesting one to say the least! As you may recall we had a VERY, VERY illness filled January. With all the sickness that was going on, it unfortunately effected lil' E's birthday celebration. And I wanted to celebrate BIG, because I really think the 5th birthday is kinda a big deal! On Evan's actual birthday, him and I were sick. About half way through the day, Jeremy mentioned that we probably should still celebrate it. So he ran to the store and bought a small cake and his favorite meal of Shrimp Fried Rice from Trader Joe's. It was so sad. I mean, Evan didn't think so, but the guilt of not having a big celebration with a cake that I made was definitely in the back of my mind, there we sat, the boys and myself in pajamas singing "Happy Birthday".
And because he was sick, we had to postpone his friend birthday party. He was so bummed about that too!
But little did the boys know, Jeremy and I had something up our sleeves. Jeremy had just returned from a business trip where they had stayed at The Kalahari Resort. He had called me from there and said we would definitely need to bring the boys. I mean after all, they had a Sonic the Hedgehog air hockey table, Super Mario Claw machine, and Angry Birds Claw Machine and several Super Mario games. Besides the games of course, the Kalahari is known for the massive indoor water park. More on that in a minute.
But we did manage to have the family party, even though we were still all sick. Evan LOVES a local eatery called the Blueberry Cafe. They are known for their muffins. They even have a "muffin man" who comes out and shows what muffins he's made that day! The boys get a kick out of it. So we had Evan's second celebration there. The muffin man even came out and sang "Happy Birthday" to Evan. So cute!
So I guess the Kalahari was Evan's 3rd Birthday celebration! HA!
We packed up the kids and headed up north for a long weekend of celebrating Evan. Within 5 minutes in the truck, Evan had thrown up - ha! We couldn't catch a break. But fortunately, Jeremy and I were pretty sure it was caused by the antibiotic he was on from an ear infection. So we forged on and hoped for the best! Fortunately I travel with a trash can for occasions such like this (I mean come on, do you remember the kind of month we have had?) We stopped at a local store and purchased everything we would need just in case it were to happen again: paper towels, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, trash bags, antacids.
After getting to the Kalahari, we asked if we could get a room upgrade and they gave us one for free. SCORE! My mama always says it never hurts to ask. So we got the suite with the kitchen, which saved us a lot of money, from not eating out, that we could then spend on games!
The boys had a blast! The game area was a huge hit! We spent waaayyyy too much money in there - ha! But I did show the boys how I was a master claw machine winner! I won 2 angry birds for Carter and a Mario for Evan. In the wise words of SpongeBob, "Be the claw, be the claw" and yes, I was!
The water park was amazing. The boys did not want to go on any water slides but did want to hang out in the wave pool the whole time. Evan would have spent the whole weekend in that darn wave pool! We did manage to get him on one slide though, but he decided they weren't for him! But he tried!
The Kalahari was a huge hit! Carter is already asking to do that for his 5th birthday, so it will be fun to try out the resort in the summer time!
A couple of weeks after the 3rd birthday celebration, we were able to have Evan's friend party. February didn't start much healthier, so I took a very low key approach to his party! Evan just wanted his two best friends to spend the night, so I didn't have to worry about the party planning.
They made their own pizzas:
And had a ice cream sundae bar. I didn't make him a cake for this party either. I thought it would be fun to have a giant cookie for his cake to add to the sundaes! And by saying "I thought it would be fun" means I just wasn't up for making a cake so I had to improvise! HA! I think it was a hit!
Evan wanted to watch Star Wars with his friends, so I made the decorations Star Wars themed. Nothing like having 4 Darth Vaders running around. The funny thing is, after about 15 minutes, the boys were done watching it and went back downstairs to the Wii! Oh well!
So even though the month was ravaged by illness, we were able to celebrate Evan all month. So really, he got a great deal out of all of this!
But most of all, we got to celebrate Evan! I love you little man! Hope you enjoyed your 5th birthday!
