I may have said, once or twice, that I LOVE college football. Jeremy is one of the lucky men whose wife looks forward to watching football ALL.DAY.LONG on Saturdays. Before kids, we would get up late - at least before 10 A.M., make breakfast and watch College Game Day in bed. AHHHH, those were the days! Not that I would change my early Saturdays with 2 rambunctious kids now, but during College Football season, I have to admit, I miss those days!
The fall of 2002, I had just started my teaching career and finally was able to contribute to our financial situation. We had been married already for one year and during that year, Jeremy had just started his career and I was a full time student. Making ends meet was tough to say the least.
That first year of teaching was TOUGH!! I had taken over, after a month of school, because the teacher went on medical leave. Let me just say that the students were used to absolutely NO STRUCTURE and whipping them into shape was challenging with no light at the end of the tunnel. I would come home every evening and cry, because I didn't know how to reach out to these kids. Without going into any more detail, let me just say for the record, that year made me a better teacher! It challenged me in ways that I never thought were possible and it forced me out of my little protective bubble!
That year, Jeremy surprised me with Michigan football tickets. It was the only time in the 13 years that I have known Jeremy, that he was able to pull off surprising me. He made it a scavenger hunt, and I was still clueless up until I opened the final clue to find 2 tickets to the game - Michigan vs. Wisconsin. I screamed so loudly, that I am surprised that no one in our apartment building called the police!
So that was the beginning of our yearly tradition of going up to Ann Arbor for the weekend! Now that we have kids, the trip is a little bit more special because we leave the kiddos at their Grandma and Grandpa's house for the weekend and make it a little getaway from the hectic lives of parenthood!
This past weekend, Jeremy and I were able to get away. The game itself wasn't set to be a great one - hello - Delaware State! But it was the time away that I was looking forward to the most! There are several things that I MUST DO when I am at the game. And trust me, I have to have it a certain way or my whole day gets screwed up. First, we have to get to the Big House right when the gates open. We usually have to stop and eat a "Big Red Smoky" even at 10 AM - that one's on Jeremy's "Must do" list. We then stop at the M-Den to buy various paraphernalia. Then this next one is critical. We have to go stand at the gates that the band comes in at and wait for them to make their entrance. I love hearing the drum line coming from the distance. They then stop before going in and play all the faves. After they are finished we high-tail it back into the stadium to our seats to watch the team come out, then finally to watch the band high step it in. This TRULY is my favorite part of the day. Don't get me wrong, I love watching my team play live, but the only time I get to hear the band is when we are at the game! And of course, after the game, we always stay for the mini-concert the band does! Once I see and hear "Temptation" and watch the percussion do their thing, we can leave!! (If you choose to watch this link focus on the 1:25 mark where the drummers pass the drum stick down - I love it!!)
There is just something special about getting away! I LOVE this weekend every year, because we can act like kids again. We can run around, cheer, chant, sing and laugh just like the other 100,00 crazy fans of the Big House. Although this year, most of the conversations began with, "OH Evan would love seeing that" we still made time to talk about "us"! We forget about "us" as individuals and "us" as husband and wife.
