As a new mom of 2 kids, I have been really trying to give equal amounts of one-on-one time. It rarely happens that way because, let's face it, Evan wants all of my time and Carter doesn't need me much right now except to eat and change his diaper. So most days are filled with entertaining Evan and Carter comes along for the ride. Most of the time I feel guilty about this relationship because Carter is getting the short end of the stick. When I think back on how things were when Evan was a newborn, he got me every waking moment and I had my camera waiting to capture it. Before Carter came along, I made a vow not to be one of those moms who had thousands of pictures of the first born and 2 of the second. Well, as those moms I have resented, I have become one. The only time I find to take pictures of Carter is when Evan is not home.
Well, not today. I had Carter doing some "tummy time" and he was really enjoying it. Evan was playing on the floor with his trucks so I thought I would get some pics of Carter. And this is how it went...I got up to get me camera and Evan was on to me right away. He jumped up and immediately got in the way of the camera.
"Evan, mommy is taking Carter's picture right now, go play with your trucks."
"Evan, you are standing on Mommy's leg and it hurts...go read a book and let me take a picture of Carter."
"Evan, you are going to hurt Carter by climbing on him...please go find something to do and let me get a picture of Carter."
"Fine, I give up. Stand next to Carter and I will take a picture of both of you."
"Evan, Mommy's putting the camera away so you can go play with your toys now" as I hide the camera..."ah ha, fooled you."
I was able to get a couple of pics but it was a challenge and took more time and energy than expected. Even though I think Evan is too small to really understand what a camera is and does, I find it amazing that he knew that he usually is the focus and that he was a little jealous of mom's attention towards Carter. And poor Carter, he just laid there and let his older brother climb and drool all over him without even a fuss.
