This weekend, I did something that made me feel like a new woman. Something that I want to shout from the rooftops. Something that lifted a huge burden from my shoulders. What was this you ask?
I organized Evan's room!!!!
If you know me, you know that I have a hard time with organization. I am a "pile" person. I can tell you where everything is, almost down to the exact place in the pile. But for the life of me, getting my house organized (and not just organized but it looking nice too) is pretty much impossible.
I AM A PERFECTIONIST!!
That's right. I have read a lot about perfectionism and the inability to organize because of you perfectionism. I have found myself trying and then I get overloaded with the kids or having to make a decision on what to buy and I shut down because if I can't do it right, I just can't do it! Hey even the FlyLady confirms this ; ).
On top of being a perfectionist, I am kinda indecisive. I will go searching for a new organizational tool and can't make up my mind because I want it to be perfect. So then I never purchase anything. And the cycle continues!!!
So for about 4 months! Yes 4 MONTHS. I have been working on a plan for Evan's room (gotta start small, right?). I needed something for all the toys and clutter. What I had been doing was purchasing small bins for his toys, but it got to the point with both kids that there were stacks of bins everywhere. Which looks too cluttered for me!
I have also found the Evan must take after me. Because, when I ask him to clean his room, he gets frustrated because there are too many bins to think about.
So after months of going back and forth, I purchased a toy bin that I think will be perfect in his room. Except now, his room looks a little cramped with it in there. But hopefully when Carter moves to his big boy bed and we redesign his room, something from Evan's will go into Carter's and help balance everything out.
But right now, I am in organized glory. Evan's room has been picked up for 3 days now!!! Hey people, it's the little steps, right?!!!!
My decision came down to two different items:
- Ikea's Trofast Collection: I love this idea!! I love that you can mix and match pieces that fit a room. And that you can mix up the sizes and colors of the bins! In a sample room off Ikea's site, there was a window seat along with some other pieces that I thought would be super cute. And Evan would love having a window seat. I could dress it up with pillows and blankets. But in the end, Jeremy and I decided that these pieces would be too much for Evan's small room. And also, the Trofast didn't have a matching wardrobe. I was bummed!
- What I went with instead, is smaller, but it matches Evan's room perfectly!! I got this at Target:I took pics of all of the items that would now call this storage "home". And taped signs on each bin so that Evan and Carter know where everything belongs. And of course, added words to each picture, so that Evan can learn the words that match ;-)! This is the end result:
I am pleased with the results. And yes, just this one little accomplishment, made me feel like a new woman!! If only I could hire someone to come in to my house and lay out a plan (including furniture) for the remaining 9 rooms on how to organize all our crap! I can only imagine....
So if any of you organizational gurus want to make over my house, just let me know ;-)!!
